HAEF Preschool & Kindergarten

The Hellenic American Educational Foundation (HAEF) Preschool & Kindergarten is an educational facility with a GFA of 8,300 m2. The project was certified with LEED v3 Schools in 2014, thus becoming the first LEED Platinum building in Greece.

Using LEED the project team employed a variety of strategies to reduce energy and water use, create a healthy indoor environment, rationalize resource demand and implement innovative strategies. The roof is covered with a green roof enhancing local biodiversity, mitigating urban heat-island effect and enhancing rainwater management. The building is equipped with a horizontal ground-source heat exchanger and heat pump units meeting for cooling and heating needs as well as with a solar thermal array for domestic hot water production. Rainwater harvesting and low flow and flush water fixtures reduce potable water demand. The creation of high-quality indoor spaces has been achieved with sufficient daylight penetration. Integrating LEED has been a great challenge for HAEF since the Project is a real case-study of a sustainable project enabling the provision of specific lessons to the students of the entire campus.
